Bicycles for Humanity
Colorado

Changing the World
Two Wheels at a Time

Bicycles for Humanity Colorado delivers transportation to Africa in the form of donated bikes. 100% of B4H’s proceeds are used to ship donated bikes to rural towns in Africa where there is no means of transportation beyond walking. After donating bikes to mobile healthcare workers, the rest are sold from the retrofitted shipping container - turned local bike shop, providing a boost to the economy of the community.

B4H creates opportunities for African women by enabling transportation for commerce, healthcare and education. B4H also provides entrepreneurial opportunities by hiring and training women as bike mechanics and to manage the bike shops.

For people living on $2 per day, a bicycle is normally far beyond their reach. Most female heads of households lack transportation to access healthcare, economic and educational opportunities for their family. B4H is focused on opening up opportunities for women by giving them much needed transportation and the ability to help provide a better life for their families.

Shannon Galpin

Founder & Director, Mountain 2 Mountain

Shannon Galpin bikes through Afghanistan meeting women and furthering the women's rights movement.  Hear about her unique experience of helping Afghan women to achieve equality in work, education, and leadership positions.

"Education for women and girls is the first step towards empowerment.  When these girls are given the tools not just to read and write, but to critically think, to understand political and social issues that affect them, then have the ability to be heard, to be respected, and to become the catalysts for change within their own country.  This will do more for women's rights, violence against women and children, and economic growth than anything else we can do."

Mountain 2 Mountain and Shannon have been featured on Dateline.

Tuesday, September 8, 2009 in Boulder

Global Education Fund (GEF) is BoldeReach's 2009 beneficiary.  GEF will be speaking about the work that they are doing in Kenya to support education for orphans and displaced children.  In particular, they will be addressing their Leadership Program in Kenya that supports schools, scholarships, special leadership courses and mentoring.

"Education is a central factor in Africa's poverty trap. Educated children will almost certainly earn more than their parents when they grow up, and be able to do more for their own children. Pulling children out of school all but condemns them to poverty."

Seeking Common Ground believes that in order to create peace people must accept that conflict is an inevitable part of life, and learn skills with which to approach it effectively and constructively.

People in conflict, who come together intentionally, create relationships through social interaction, and practice new communication skills, approach their conflicts from a place of connection rather than detachment. That connection is integral to building a lasting and deep understanding between people in conflict.  Seeking Common Ground strives to empower individuals to change the world by creating peaceful communities through integration, socialization, communication, and leadership development.

Seeking Common Ground operates from these guiding principles:http://www.s-c-g.org/images/dot.gif

  • Prejudice can be transformed into understanding by confronting fears of the unknown and breaking down stereotypes;
  • Communication is a learned skill, and is integral to understanding other perspectives;
  • Meaningful encounters with diverse groups of people decrease stereotyping of those groups;
  • In order to approach conflict effectively, the parties involved must build relationships;
  • Young women need access to programs that enable them to become leaders in their communities;
  • Every individual has the power to effect positive change in her own life and the lives of those around them.
